Going organic

Originally posted here on February 22, 2010.

So, I really need to go to bed, but I want to put down my thoughts first.

Last year, I tried to grow a salad garden with romain lettuce, spinach, broccoli, snap peas and something else, but it didn’t turn out so well. The spinach was the best, the lettuce was okay and the broccoli and peas died before I could do much with them. The biggest problem I had was that I didn’t do enough research.

Now that I have a house, I want to have a little garden that I can eat from. I have just started looking online for info, but I found a couple of websites that have some good information. This website is just by a woman who lives in Arizona too who has a garden and her advice and tips (“articles”) for growing an organic garden. She links to this website that also has some really good information (and feel-good hippie stuff too).

Tomorrow, I am going to go to the nursery near me and get some of my questions answered.

A lady at work did an organic garden, but she has planted everything in large rubbermaid type containers with holes drilled in the bottom and she says they do well all year long because she is able to move them near the house when it gets cold. My biggest concern here is drainage, but it seems like a good idea because my soil is crap.

On the other hand, a guy at work does his in the ground, but near-ish to his house to retain the heat from the walls. He digs up all his dirt and fills it with a manure mixed with something I cannot remember right now. This seems like a decent idea, but I don’t really want to have to dig a trench. Additionally, I don’t have a ton of space on the shadier side of my house, but on the other side I do. I could use that side and cover the plants for most of the day (which is what those websites talk about). The only down side to that is my shed is over there and I’d have to take us walking through it into account. Also, the tap over there is a little farther away than on the other side.

I also don’t know how many plants I want to start with. I don’t want to end up over my head here. I know how I am with things.

Here is what I’m thinking of planting:
..and a fig tree! (I love figs)

Not sure what else and I also know that the growing season for some of those is not right now.

I guess I’ll have some more information tomorrow!
